Converting green electricity from renewable sources into storable energy carriers such as hydrogen, ammonia or dimethyl ether is a practical solution with several key advantages: these Power-to-X energy carriers guarantee energy security independent of the volatility of sustainable energy production; they can be transported over long distances; and they are suitable for defossilizing sectors that can currently be electrified only to a limited extent or not at all. The mobility sector (shipping and aviation), the industrial sector (steel and cement production) and the chemical industry will remain dependent on green energy sources and chemicals in the medium term.
The workshop is organised by the Sustainable Energy Council. The content of the workshop is being developed jointly by the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE and the Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research TNO, with the support of the Port of Rotterdam.
The aim of the workshop is to map the Power-to-X (PtX) landscape and highlight short- and medium-term solutions to be implemented in the coming years, as well as to discuss different technology options and pathways for the production, transport and use of sustainable synthesis products as energy carriers for the mobility sector and other industrial applications.
