Closer cooperation with Dubai

Despite dubious past experience with the countries of the Middle East and North Africa region, in November 2021 the German government signed a declaration of intent with the United Arab Emirates covering the establishment of an Emirati-German task force for hydrogen and synthetic fuels. The deal was given the seal of approval in Dubai by Andreas Feicht, the former state secretary to the German economy minister, and Suhail Al Mazrouei, the UAE energy minister. The agreement, which proposes greater collaboration between the two countries on green hydrogen, was preceded by an initial electrolyzer pilot project conducted by Siemens Energy and the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority in May 2021.

Hydrogen-powered combustion engines seemed dead after BMW had stopped development work on H2 reciprocating piston engines years ago. This still applies to passenger cars, but not to commercial vehicles or stationary plants. In the sector of large combined heat and power plants, 2G Energy AG has long been working on making its gas engines compatible with hydrogen.

Late last November, the total number of hydrogen filling stations in Germany stood at 35, prompting a statement from NOW that the expansion of the refueling grid was making significant progress. Rhineland-Palatinate’s first public hydrogen station, which had received around EUR 900,000 from the federal transportation ministry, had just been inaugurated in Koblenz (more…)
